Welcome to AshlynWouldGo.org

The Ashlyn Would Go Foundation was established in memory of Ashlyn Leigh Shoemaker who died at age 14 on April 21, 2005 from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

She was a delightful young woman with many interests, including literature, the arts and a tremendous love for surfing and the ocean.

The foundation was established in Ashlyn's memory and is an effort to help others reach their full potential in life. We would like to thank all of you, and especially our brothers and sisters at Surfrider and the Texas Gulf Surfing Association for helping to support our efforts and making all of this possible.  For more information on Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Sudden Cardic Arrest (SCA) please visit our links page.

5th Annual TGSA Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Grom RoundUp

The Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA) and the Ashlyn Would Go Foundation teamed up again on Sunday August 22nd for the 5th Annual Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Grom Round up.  This years event was bigger and brighter than ever and a HUGE success!  A record number of families turned out for the event and were treated to a great day of fun, food and fellowship on the beach.  The kids had a fantastic time and there were plentiful waves to go around.

These surf contests are designed to introduce competitive surfing to children ages 13 & under, to promote surfing as a family sport, to raise awareness about the risks of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy to adolescence and to remember Ashlyn, a TGSA competitor. Ashlyn inspired people with her dedication to Galveston, the beach & ocean and tremendous love of surfing.

The Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Scholarship is an effort to help others reach their full potential in life. The scholarship will be awarded annually to graduating Seniors at Ball High School in Galveston, Texas.

The first Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Sholarship, a $5000 award was presented in May 2008, to Bori Juhasz, who is now a sophmore at the University of Houston and is a member of their competitive swim team. Bori was a friend and classmate of Ashlyn's, and stood out among all of the applicants that were reviewed by the scholarship committee as the one that most closely personified Ashlyn's sense of compassion and acceptance of others.

The second Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Scholarship award was presented in May 2009 to Adrian Sauceda who is now a freshman at Texas A&M University in College Station pursuing a BS in Sports Management.

In 2007 the Ashlyn Would Go Foundation purchased two Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) for the Texas Gulf Surfing Association. This will allow for one to be on hand for both the north and south districts, should a competitor or spectator have a cardiac event.
